The Gather
Smocking pulls a flat width of cloth into controlled volume. What study 12 is chasing — and where a drawing has to stop promising.
Smocking takes a flat width of cloth and gathers it — dozens of parallel folds pulled into a fraction of their length, then held at a band. Study 12 is chasing the discipline of that: a plain, structured waistband, and beneath it a controlled cascade that reads as volume without tipping into mess.
The band is the argument. The gather is only free because something holds it.
On paper the folds fall however the hand draws them. Cloth is stricter — weight decides how deep the gather sits, and whether it stands or collapses. That is the part a drawing can only promise.
